Why choose Brushless DC (BLDC motors)? What are the main advantages and reasons for using Brushless DC motors and controllers?



BRUSHLESS MOTORS OFFER IMPROVEMENTS IN LIFE WITH THE RIGHT BRUSHLESS MOTOR CONTROLLER

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors can generally be said to offer improved performance and life than brushed DC motors. The absence of brushes and friction within the motor is at the heart of this for two main reasons:

1. Firstly, brushes add friction. This reduces the overall top speeds which can be achieved in a brushed DC motor.

2. Secondly, brushes create sparks which can be damaging and the brushes themselves ultimately wear out reducing conduction and therefore reducing the lifespan of the motor.

By making the motor brushless it is therefore possible to remove these issues and improve the lifespan and performance of the motor considerably.


APPROXIMATELY FIVE TIMES THE LIFESPAN OF OTHER TYPES OF MOTOR

A useful rule of thumb is that BLDC motors will typically operate well for 10000 hours, whereas DC motors typically operate for around 2000 hours. There are obviously exceptions to this rule and the quality of manufacture will always play a part (particularly the quality of bearings on the Brushless DC motor) but this is useful as a general guide.


BRUSHLESS MOTOR CONTROLLERS ADD A RANGE OF PERFORMANCE BENEFITS

The fact that a brushless DC motor requires a brushless motor driver or controller (sometimes also known as an electronic speed control or ESC) is frequently cited as a disadvantage of brushless motors over other types of motor. Whilst this can certainly add some cost to the motor (hence people often cite it as a disadvantage) it is also important to remember that an intelligent brushless motor controller such as the ZDBL15 BLDC Motor Driver can add a huge range of performance benefits, from greater energy efficiency to controlled dosing and speed management.
